Over The Counter (OTC) Medications

In line with NHS guidance, we will not issue prescriptions for over the counter medicines for a range of minor health concerns. Such medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket or online. The team of health professionals at your local pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage minor health concerns and if your symptoms suggest it’s more serious, they’ll ensure you get the care you need.

NHS guidance states that certain medications that are available over the counter (OTC) should not be routinely prescribed in primary care because:

  • there is limited evidence of clinical effectiveness for the item
  • the item would be prescribed for a condition that is self-limiting and will clear up on its own without the need for treatment
  • the item would be prescribed for a condition that is appropriate for self-care.
